  1. 4 hours Markets, bakeries, kafanas and rakija

Meet your guide at Kalenić market and walk the stalls with the producers: young cheese, kajmak, ajvar, smoked meats and whatever is in season. A neighbourhood bakery serves burek with yogurt. A short taxi ride takes you to the old town for small plates in a traditional kafana, a guided tasting of three rakijas (or home-made juices) and Serbian coffee with a sweet in Skadarlija.

Signature moments

The cheese ladies of Kalenić

At the dairy stalls you taste young cheese and kajmak before you buy, and learn why every family has its favourite seller.

Rakija, explained

Three glasses, three fruits and the story of the drink that opens most Serbian visits and celebrations.

A kafana lunch, Belgrade style

Shared plates in a kafana, the tavern where Belgraders have eaten, argued and sung since the 19th century.

Before you choose

Is this day for you?

A good fit if

First-time visitors who want to understand Serbia through its food, curious eaters, and travellers who would rather taste than queue at museums.

Maybe not if

Vegans: the market and kafana stops rely on dairy and meat (a vegetarian version is available on request), and anyone who wants a sit-down restaurant meal rather than many small tastings.

Pace and effort

About four hours, mostly on foot in the city centre with one short taxi ride. Enough food to replace lunch.

Make it yours

Change anything

A home cooking class the next day (DX-22) · An evening in a Skadarlija kafana with live music · A rakija distillery visit in Šumadija (planned).
