Full day Smederevo and Viminacium
Drive down the Danube to Smederevo, the vast triangular fortress that Despot Đurađ Branković built in the 1420s and the last capital of medieval Serbia before the Ottoman conquest of 1459. Continue east to Viminacium, near the confluence of the Mlava and the Danube, where a Roman legionary camp grew into a provincial capital. Walk the archaeological park with your guide before returning to Belgrade in the late afternoon.

Signature moments
Where the legion stood
The Seventh Legion Claudia was based at Viminacium, on the Danube frontier of the empire. Excavations still continue each season, so what you see depends on the year's work, and your guide explains how the city fitted into Rome's defence of the river.
