Leave Belgrade early and drive west through Valjevo to Bajina Bašta on the Drina. A short stop by the river for the little house on a rock, first built in 1968 and rebuilt several times after floods, then up the valley to Perućac, where the Vrelo stream falls into the Drina. Climb by mountain road to Mitrovac on the Tara plateau and walk with your guide along forest tracks to the Banjska stena viewpoint. Signature moments

The canyon from the edge

At Banjska stena the forest ends at a cliff, with the lake and the river almost 800 metres below and Bosnia and Herzegovina on the far side.

A river called "the Year"

Vrelo is said to be as many metres long as there are days in a year; locals call it Godina.
