10 hours The Danube wetlands and Deliblato Sands
Leave Belgrade early and drive east through Pančevo and Kovin to the Danube. Spend the morning on the Danube at Dubovac, inside the Labudovo okno wetland, which reaches downstream past the mouths of the Karaš and the Nera to the Romanian border: walk the dyke and the marsh edges and scan the wide river with the telescope. After a picnic or a riverside lunch, continue into Deliblato Sands for the afternoon: open steppe, sandy tracks and forest edges. What you look for depends on the season: in winter, geese, smew, pygmy cormorants and white-tailed eagles on the river; from April to June, bee-eaters, sand martins, herons and terns by the water, and rollers, hoopoes and booted eagles in the sands; from late August to mid-September, birds on migration. Return to Belgrade in the evening.

Signature moments
A river that changes with the seasons
In winter the Danube below Deliblato holds thousands of ducks and geese; by May the same banks are busy with nesting bee-eaters and sand martins.
Sand in the middle of the plain
The dunes of Deliblato formed from wind-blown sand after the Pannonian Sea withdrew, and are now held in place by grass and forest.
Before you choose
