An emperor's vineyards
Tradition credits the Roman emperor Probus, born in nearby Sirmium, with planting vines on these hills: both Fruška Gora and Ilok tell the story.
A cellar in the hill
In Baranja's wine villages families cut their cellars into the sides of sunken lanes, and tastings happen at the door.
The river between two countries
From the monument at Batina you look across the Danube to Serbia and the plain of Bačka.

Before you choose
Is this journey for you?
A good fit if
Wine lovers and food travellers, repeat visitors to Serbia who want to see the Danube borderlands, and couples who like slow days, small estates and country cooking.
Maybe not if
Travellers who do not drink wine (the days are built around tastings), and anyone looking for big-name sights: this is a journey of villages, cellars and river landscapes.
Pace and effort
Relaxed. Drives of 1–2 hours on most days; days 5 and 8 have about 3–3¾ hours of driving with stops. Two crossings of the Serbia–Croatia border, which is an external Schengen border: border waits are not included, and EU biometric registration (EES) on first entry may add time.
Tailor-made
Make it your own
A day across the Hungarian border in the red-wine town of Villány (from Baranja, about an hour each way) · An extra night on Fruška Gora · Vršac and the Banat vineyards as a separate add-on day from Belgrade · Harvest weeks in September.
