Signature moments

Three rivers, one gorge

At Šćepan Polje the Tara and the Piva meet and become the Drina: you raft into the meeting point at the end of your day on the water.

A forest that was never logged

In Perućica beech and fir trees stand as they have for centuries, with the Skakavac waterfall falling about 75 m from the cliffs.

From the mountains to the sea

On the last day the road drops from the Durmitor plateau to the Bay of Kotor, from pasture and pine to palm trees in a few hours.

Before you choose

Is this journey for you?

A good fit if

Active travellers who want to walk, paddle and raft rather than drive between sights, couples and friends who like nature and simple mountain lodging, and families with teenagers.

Maybe not if

Travellers who want a sightseeing tour of the Balkan towns (see Balkan Loop from Belgrade), travellers who cannot swim or do not want to raft, and anyone who needs hotel comfort every night: two nights are in a riverside rafting camp or guesthouse.

Pace and effort

Active, moderate. Walks of 1½–5½ hours on four days and a rafting day of about 20 km. The two long travel days (days 2 and 8) have about 4¼–4½ hours of driving on mountain roads; on days 3 to 6 the drives are shorter, up to about 2¾ hours. Two border crossings by road (Serbia–Bosnia and Herzegovina on day 4, Bosnia and Herzegovina–Montenegro on day 6); on the rafting day the rafting company also takes you across the border to the put-in. Border waits are not included. In May and early June the Tara runs high and snow may linger on Durmitor; the rafting stretch and the day 7 walk are then adjusted.

Tailor-made

Make it your own

Bobotov Kuk, the highest summit of Durmitor, for fit walkers (instead of the day 7 walk) · The zipline at the Tara bridge, or canyoning in the Nevidio gorge (usually July–September, licensed operator) · An extra night on the Bay of Kotor · Finish at Podgorica airport instead of Tivat.
